Предложные сочетания to be on/off duty обычно используются в сферах постоянных служб: армии, больницах, полиции, постоянно действующих систем обслуживания - быть на посту, нести дежурство/вахту: it was the same nurse that had been on duty at the time of the accident это была та же сестра, которая дежурила во время аварии; she'll be off duty at noon она окончит дежурство (сдаст дежурство) в полдень. Не рекомендуется употреблять в школьной ситуации в значении "дежурить, быть дежурным". Вместо этого можно использовать существительное duty в конструкции: who's duty is it (to bring the books)? кто должен (принести книги)?
